Exam format and simulation

Every question has three answers, of which one or two are correct. Each wrongly ticked answer and each missing correct answer counts as one error point.

According to the announcement by the road traffic offices, the basic theory test A/A1 is to have 55 instead of 50 questions from 1 January 2027; the time limit and error limit for it had not been published as of October 2026. The simulation reflects the format valid until 31 December 2026.

Information as of October 2026. Exam rules can change; the responsible authority (the road traffic office of your canton) is decisive.

What it is about

The basic theory test is the first step towards the learner's licence for motorcycles (A, A 35 kW, A1) and the driving licence for mopeds (M). The course covers signs and markings, right of way, speed and braking distance, overtaking, motorways and tunnels, plus motorcycle-specific topics such as equipment, cornering technique and hazard perception. As in the exam, every question has three answers, of which one or two are correct.

What the course includes

Topics

  1. Licence categories, learner's permit & probationary period

Which category applies to which two-wheeler (M, A1, A with 35 kW restriction, A), minimum ages, learner's permit, basic practical training, traffic awareness course, progressive access to unrestricted category A, and the probationary driving licence with further training.

    55 questions

  2. Danger signs

Triangular danger signs warn of places that you would not recognise, or would recognise too late, if you were unfamiliar with the area – especially important for two-wheelers are bends, slippery roads, uneven surfaces, loose chippings and rails. Also: where the signs are placed and what the additional panels mean.

    45 questions

  3. Regulatory and information signs

Round prohibition and mandatory signs, partial driving bans for motorcycles and mopeds, signs for speed, overtaking, stopping and parking, zones (30 km/h zone, shared zone, pedestrian zone), cycle paths, additional panels, and important information signs and direction signs.

    75 questions

  4. Right of way

Priority to the right, right of way regulated by signs, roundabouts, exits and field tracks, turning left, and the right of way of pedestrians, trams, buses and vehicles with blue lights.

    60 questions

  5. Road markings and traffic lights

Longitudinal and transverse markings, lane, cycle and bus markings, traffic lights with arrows and flashing lights, and police hand signals.

    45 questions

  6. Speed, following distance and stopping distance

General and signed speed limits, appropriate speed, following distance, and reaction, braking and stopping distance according to the rules of thumb.

    55 questions

  7. Keeping right, lanes and overtaking

Keeping right, choice of lane, queuing traffic and passing, riding side by side, overtaking and overtaking bans, getting into lane, zip merging, indicating and passing oncoming traffic.

    50 questions

  8. Motorways, tunnels and level crossings

Who may use motorways and expressways, the special rules there (hard shoulder, emergency corridor, joining, left-hand lane), and correct behaviour in tunnels and at level crossings.

    40 questions

  9. Motorcycle and moped technology

What the VTS requires of motorcycles and mopeds – lights, mirrors, tyres, brakes, noise, number plate, modifications – and what you as the rider must check before every ride.

    50 questions

  10. Helmet and protective gear

Compulsory helmet wearing and permitted helmets on motorcycles, mopeds and e-bikes, responsibility for passengers, visor and visibility, distraction from music and phones, and recommended protective clothing and conspicuity.

    35 questions

  11. Riding technique and bends

Vision, choice of line with a late apex, lean angle and countersteering, braking before and in the bend, ABS, swerving, and riding safely in a group – with the related traffic rules.

    55 questions

  12. Hazard perception

Typical hazards for motorcyclists and moped riders: being overlooked, blind spots, doors, hidden pedestrians and children, slippery surfaces, wild animals, wind, glare and other people's mistakes – recognise them early and react correctly.

    55 questions

  13. Mopeds and e-bikes

What a fast moped (Mofa, fast e-bike) is and what a light moped (e-bike up to 25 km/h) is, which licences, number plates and insurance vignettes are required, and which traffic rules apply to mopeds – mostly the rules for cyclists.

    45 questions

  14. Fitness to ride & behaviour after accidents

When you may not ride (alcohol, drugs, medication, tiredness, agitation), what the alcohol ban and qualified drunkenness mean, and how to behave correctly after an accident – secure the scene, help, report.

    59 questions

  15. Passengers, load, trailers, stopping & parking

Who may ride on the motorcycle with you and how, how to carry luggage and trailers correctly, what applies when towing, and where you may stop or park – on a motorcycle and on a moped.

    45 questions

  16. Environment, consideration & legal consequences

Avoid unnecessary noise and other nuisance, ride in an environmentally friendly way, show consideration for people and animals – and know which measures you face for offences: fixed penalty, warning, licence withdrawal, extreme speeding offence.

    40 questions

  17. Rider assistance, automation & traffic sense

How ABS, cornering ABS, traction control, cruise control/ACC and blind-spot assistants work, where their limits are and why responsibility always stays with you – plus traffic sense: understanding other road users, communication and a defensive riding style.
