Exam format and simulation

Every question has three answers, of which one or two are correct. Each wrongly ticked answer and each missing correct answer counts as one error point.

The questions in this course are written by us on the basis of the published legislation and generally accepted safety practice: most questions cite an article of an act or ordinance; a small part is additionally or entirely based on accepted practice and rules of thumb (for example on stopping distance) and is labelled «Praxiswissen» (practical knowledge) in learning mode and in the results. The simulation «Kat. G» draws only questions that apply to category G, the simulation «Kat. F» only questions that apply to category F.

Information as of October 2026. Exam rules can change; the responsible authority (the road traffic office of your canton) is decisive.

What it is about

Anyone who wants to drive a tractor or another agricultural or forestry motor vehicle on the road in Switzerland needs the driving licence of special category G (up to 30 km/h, minimum age 14) or F (up to 45 km/h; minimum age 16 for tractors and agricultural vehicles, otherwise 18; VZV Art. 6). The course covers the categories and the way to the licence, signs and markings, right of way, speed and stopping distance, keeping right, turning and being overtaken, mountain roads, level crossings and tunnels, as well as agricultural vehicles with their number plates and permitted journeys, lighting and marking, trailers, weights, load and passengers, technology and the risk of overturning, weather, dirt on the road and animals, fitness to drive, accidents and breakdowns, and environment and consideration. As in the exam, every question has three answers, one or two of which are correct. In the pictures, your vehicle is the red tractor.

What the course includes

Topics

  1. Categories F and G, licences and test

What the special categories F and G allow, from what age you may drive, how you get the licence and what the tractor driving course (G40) gives you.

    36 questions

  2. Danger signs

Triangular signs warn of dangers. You learn what they mean and how to react to them with a slow, heavy vehicle.

    24 questions

  3. Regulatory and information signs

Prohibitions, mandatory signs, dimensions and weights, zones and information – and which special rules apply to agricultural vehicles.

    37 questions

  4. Right of way

Priority to the right, main roads, roundabouts, pedestrians, trams and emergency vehicles – nearly half of the test questions concern traffic rules like these.

    45 questions

  5. Markings, traffic lights and police signals

Reading lines, arrows and traffic lights and correctly following police signals.

    28 questions

  6. Speed, distance and stopping distance

Even 30 km/h can be too fast. This topic is about adapted speed, rules of thumb and braking with a heavy trailer.

    31 questions

  7. Keeping right, turning and being overtaken

How you drive as the slowest vehicle on the road: keeping right, letting faster vehicles pass, turning safely into fields, passing oncoming traffic and reversing.

    57 questions

  8. Mountain roads, level crossings and tunnels

Steep roads, descents, level crossings and tunnels call for particular care with a long, heavy combination.

    20 questions

  9. Agricultural vehicles, number plates and permitted journeys

What an agricultural and forestry vehicle is, how fast it may be, which plates it carries and for which journeys you may use it.

    32 questions

  10. Lights, markings and signalling

Seeing and being seen: lights on the tractor and trailer, the rear marking plate, marking over-wide and overhanging implements, the signalling paddle.

    43 questions

  11. Trailers, weights, load and passengers

How many trailers are allowed, what the weight terms mean, how to couple and secure, what the load may do and who may ride along.

    46 questions

  12. Technology, roadworthiness and risk of overturning

Rollover protection and seat belt, PTO shaft and hydraulics, mirrors, tyres and the check before setting off – and why tractors overturn on slopes.

    26 questions

  13. Recognising dangers, weather, soiled roads and animals

Recognising dangers early, driving correctly in fog, wet and snow, keeping the road clean and leading animals safely.

    41 questions

  14. Fitness to drive, accidents and breakdowns

Alcohol, drugs, medicines and tiredness – and what you must do in the event of an accident, breakdown, lost load or leaking fluids.

    38 questions

  15. Environment, noise, stopping and consideration

Avoiding noise, smoke, dust and slurry, stopping and parking correctly and driving with consideration for people and animals.
