Exam format and simulation

Every question has three answers, exactly one is correct.

What it is about

Anyone who transports dangerous goods by road in Switzerland needs the ADR training certificate in many cases. It is issued after a course with a written exam and is valid for five years. The course covers the content of the basic course – legal basis and duties, hazard classes, packages, orange plates and placards, transport documents, equipment, exemptions and limited quantities, loading and unloading, tunnels and security, what to do in an accident – as well as the specialisation courses tank, class 1 (explosive substances) and class 7 (radioactive material), each with a practice exam.

What the course includes

Topics

  1. How the exam works: courses, exam and ADR certificate

Anyone who drives dangerous goods transports that must be marked with orange-coloured plates needs an ADR driver training certificate. Here you learn which courses exist (basic course, specialization courses for tanks, Class 1 and Class 7), how the written exam is structured and how long the certificate is valid.

    26 questions

  2. Legal basis, participants, obligations, liability and penalties

Which rules apply to dangerous goods on Swiss roads, who is involved in a transport and what is each of them responsible for? On top of that: insurance, fines and the regulations for the other modes of transport.

    29 questions

  3. Hazard classes, types of hazard, UN number and packing groups

The ADR divides dangerous goods into 13 classes. You learn which hazard lies behind each class, what the UN number and packing group mean and how to find the most important information in Table A.

    27 questions

  4. Marking and labelling of packages

A package shows what is inside with the UN number, labels and special marks. You learn the labels of the classes, their minimum sizes, the orientation arrows and the marks for environmentally hazardous substances, batteries, limited quantities and overpacks.

    26 questions

  5. Orange-coloured plates, placards and hazard identification numbers

On the vehicle, the emergency services recognise the hazard from the orange-coloured plates, the placards and other marks. You learn dimensions, placement, the meaning of the hazard numbers and when each is required.

    29 questions

  6. Transport document, instructions in writing and accompanying documents

The right documents must be at hand in the cab. You learn what the transport document contains, what the instructions in writing are for and which other documents and IDs must be carried.

    25 questions

  7. Equipment, fire extinguishers and personal protective equipment

Every transport unit carrying dangerous goods needs fire extinguishers and the required equipment. You learn the minimum amounts of extinguishing agent per vehicle mass, the general and personal protective equipment and the additional equipment for certain labels.

    25 questions

  8. Exemptions, the 1000-point rule and limited quantities

Not every transport of dangerous goods is subject to all the rules. You will learn the most important exemptions (private individuals, tradesmen, fuel in the vehicle's tank), the calculation based on transport categories and what applies to packages in limited quantities (LQ) – including the Swiss special rules.

    27 questions

  9. Loading and unloading, mixed loading prohibitions, load securing and cleaning

Many mistakes happen during loading: wrong combinations, badly secured packages, dangerous goods next to food. You will learn the checks before loading, the mixed loading prohibitions, the separation from foodstuffs, load securing and cleaning after unloading.

    26 questions

  10. On the road: crew, stopping and parking, tunnels, roads and security

Special rules apply while driving: no passengers, a ban on alcohol, parking only under certain conditions, tunnel categories and Swiss road signs. On top of that comes security against theft and misuse.

    26 questions

  11. Accidents and emergencies, firefighting, environment and waste

When something happens, acting correctly is what counts. You will learn the measures in the instructions in writing, what you may and may not do in the event of a fire or leak, how to protect waters and which rules apply to special waste in Switzerland.

    25 questions

  12. Tank specialization course: tank-vehicles, inspections, filling and marking

The tank specialization course covers driving behaviour with a liquid load, the vehicle types FL and AT, tank inspections and the certificate of approval, tank codes, degrees of filling, safe filling and discharge, and the marking of tank-vehicles.

    35 questions

  13. Class 1 specialization course: explosive substances and articles

Explosives, ammunition and fireworks make special demands. You will learn divisions and compatibility groups, EX/II and EX/III vehicles with their quantity limits, mixed loading, marking and documents, and the rules for loading, parking and convoys – with the Swiss special rules.

    34 questions

  14. Class 7 specialization course: radioactive material

Radioactive material is dangerous because of radiation and contamination. You will learn the principles of radiation protection, package types, the transport index and categories, labelling and marking, limit values in the vehicle and what to do in an accident – including the Swiss rules.
