What it is about

In Switzerland, taxi driving is also regulated by the cantons. In Basel-Stadt, the taxi driving permit requires a taxi exam with theory and local knowledge. In the canton of Zurich, the Act on the Transport of Persons by Taxis and Limousines (PTLG) has applied since 2024, with a taxi licence and a vehicle permit. For both cantons, the course covers law and permits, duties in operation, fares and taximeter, as well as local knowledge. You practise federal law (ARV 2, code 121) in the course “Taxi theory Switzerland”.

What the course includes

Topics

  1. Basel-Stadt: Law, Permits and Taxi Exam

The Basel-Stadt Taxi Act (Taxigesetz) of 2015 governs the taxi company permit, the dispatch centre permit and the taxi driver permit. For the taxi driver permit you need, in addition to the federal BPT permit, the cantonal taxi exam, which ASTAG Nordwestschweiz conducts under the supervision of the Traffic Division of the cantonal police. Violations are punished with a fine or a fixed-penalty fine.

    25 questions

  2. Basel-Stadt: Duties, Vehicle and Tariffs

Basel-Stadt has a comprehensive obligation to carry passengers, a fixed order at taxi ranks and clear rules of conduct. Taxis need a maize-yellow taxi sign, card payment, a child booster seat and the prescribed documents. The Taxitarifverordnung (taxi tariff ordinance) sets maximum prices for the basic fare, kilometre rates, waiting time and surcharges.

  3. Basel-Stadt: Local Knowledge

The taxi exam requires local knowledge of Basel-Stadt and its surroundings within a radius of 30 km. This chapter covers municipalities and districts, hospitals, stations, the EuroAirport, the trade fair, the Rhine bridges and the most important border crossings.

  4. Canton of Zürich: Permits and Responsibilities

Since 1 January 2024, the Act (PTLG) and the Ordinance (PTLV) on Passenger Transport by Taxis and Limousines have regulated taxis and limousines uniformly throughout the canton of Zürich. Taxis need a taxi licence and a taxi vehicle permit from the Office for Mobility (Amt für Mobilität); limousines need a notification and a sticker.

    25 questions

  5. Canton of Zürich: Tariffs, Taximeter and Duties in Operation

The PTLV sets out how Zürich taxi tariffs are structured and displayed and how the taximeter must be operated. The PTLG regulates the duty to carry, the free choice of taxi, the taxi light and the trip log. Violations are mostly punished with fixed-penalty fines under the cantonal fixed-penalty ordinance (KOBV).

    25 questions

  6. Canton of Zürich: Taxi Ranks and Local Knowledge of the City of Zürich

There is no longer a local knowledge test in the canton of Zürich, and municipalities may not make taxi ranks dependent on one. Good journeys nevertheless need solid local knowledge: the 12 city districts (Kreise), the Limmat bridges, important streets and the hospitals with an emergency department.
