What it is about

Anyone in Switzerland who commercially transports goods by truck (C/C1) or passengers by bus (D/D1) needs the certificate of competence under the Drivers’ Admission Ordinance (CZV). Part of the exam is the written theory on a computer. The course covers scope and further training, driving, working and rest times, tachograph and driver card, traffic rules for heavy motor vehicles, vehicle technology, the kinematic chain and eco-driving, load and load securing, CMR, LSVA (heavy vehicle charge) and customs, passenger transport, health and occupational safety, breakdowns and accidents, as well as communication and work organisation.

What the course includes

Topics

  1. How the exam works: certificate of professional competence and CZV exam parts

Anyone who transports goods commercially with trucks (C/C1) or passengers with buses (D/D1) needs the certificate of professional competence under the CZV. Here you learn how the five exam parts are structured, who is admitted and how long the certificate is valid.

    26 questions

  2. Scope, licences, periodic training and fitness to drive

Who needs the certificate of professional competence and who does not? This topic explains licence categories C/C1 and D/D1, the CZV exemptions, the obligation to complete 35 hours of periodic training and the rules on alcohol, medication and medical checks.

    27 questions

  3. Driving, working, break and rest times (ARV 1)

The Chauffeur Ordinance ARV 1 protects you and everyone else from fatigue. You learn the limits for driving and working time, the break rules and the daily and weekly rest periods, with worked examples like those in everyday practice.

    34 questions

  4. Tachograph, driver card and means of control

The tachograph records your driving, working and rest times. Here you learn about the tachograph cards, correct operation, what applies if the tachograph is faulty or a card is lost, and which data you must show at checks.

    28 questions

  5. Traffic rules for heavy motor vehicles

Special rules apply to heavy motor vehicles: lower speed limits, dimensions and weights, the Sunday and night-time driving bans, motorway lanes, tunnels and securing the vehicle. Here you learn the most important figures.

    32 questions

  6. Vehicle technology, checks and safety equipment

You know your vehicle, check it before driving and use the brakes and assistance systems correctly. This topic covers braking systems, the endurance brake, assistance systems, tyres, speed limiters and the required equipment.

    27 questions

  7. Kinematic chain, fuel consumption and eco-driving

If you understand your engine, you drive more cheaply and with less impact on the environment. This topic covers torque, power and consumption curves, driving resistances and an anticipatory, economical driving style in line with the CZV and VRV.

    26 questions

  8. Load, load distribution and load securing

In goods transport you are responsible for the load. You learn to calculate payload and axle loads, to distribute the load correctly and to secure it safely by form-fit (blocking), top-over lashing or direct lashing.

    34 questions

  9. Goods transport: consignment note, CMR, LSVA, customs and special transport

In goods transport, documents and duties are part of everyday work: the CMR consignment note and liability, the heavy vehicle fee, customs documents such as the TIR carnet and A.T.A carnet, transporting animals and the basics of dangerous goods.

    29 questions

  10. Passenger transport: passengers, bus and regulations

In passenger transport you are responsible for many people. This topic covers the seat belt obligation and children, getting on and off, school buses, emergency exits and coach equipment, insurance and the duties under the Passenger Transport Act.

    25 questions

  12. Breakdowns, accidents, emergencies and crime

In breakdowns, accidents and emergencies, acting correctly is what counts. You learn the duties after an accident, how to secure the accident scene, how to behave on the motorway and in tunnels, in case of fire and violence, and how to protect yourself against crime and illegal immigration.
