From the key facts

  • Length: two-axle bus 13.50 m, bus with more than two axles 15.00 m, articulated bus 18.75 m, drawbar combination 18.75 m. Ski boxes and other removable accessories count towards the length (VRV Art. 65 para. 1 and 2).
  • Width maximum 2.55 m, also for buses with air conditioning (2.60 m only for temperature-controlled goods bodies). Height maximum 4.00 m, also for double-decker coaches (VRV Art. 64 para. 1, Art. 66).

Question 1: What is the maximum length of an articulated bus?

  • 15.00 m
  • 18.75 m
  • 16.50 m
Show answer

Correct answer: 18.75 m

Articulated buses have a maximum length of 18.75 m. 15.00 m is the limit for non-articulated buses with more than two axles, 16.50 m that for articulated vehicles (semi-trailer combinations).

Legal reference: VRV Art. 65 para. 1 let. g; VTS Art. 94 para. 1 let. d

Question 2: What is the maximum length of a three-axle coach (non-articulated bus)?

  • 13.50 m
  • 15.00 m
  • 18.75 m
Show answer

Correct answer: 15.00 m

Buses with more than two axles may be 15.00 m long. 13.50 m only applies to two-axle buses, 18.75 m to articulated buses.

Legal reference: VRV Art. 65 para. 1 let. d; VTS Art. 94 para. 1 let. c

Question 3: Your three-axle coach is exactly 15.00 m long. For a ski trip, a removable ski box 0.80 m long is fitted at the rear. What applies?

  • That is allowed if the ski box is marked with a red flag.
  • That is allowed, because removable accessories do not count towards the vehicle length.
  • That is not allowed, because the ski box counts towards the maximum length of 15.00 m.
Show answer

Correct answer: That is not allowed, because the ski box counts towards the maximum length of 15.00 m.

On articulated buses and other buses, removable accessories such as ski boxes count towards the length; the maximum length must not be exceeded with them. Marking with a flag concerns projecting loads and does not make an excessive vehicle length permissible.
