Canton of Zürich: Tariffs, Taximeter and Duties in Operation
The PTLV sets out how Zürich taxi tariffs are structured and displayed and how the taximeter must be operated. The PTLG regulates the duty to carry, the free choice of taxi, the taxi light and the trip log. Violations are mostly punished with fixed-penalty fines under the cantonal fixed-penalty ordinance (KOBV).

Question 1: Which three partial fares make up a taxi tariff in the canton of Zürich?
- Basic fare, night surcharge and luggage surcharge
- Basic fare per order, distance fare per kilometre, time fare per minute
- Zone flat rate, waiting time per hour and tip
Show answer
Correct answer: Basic fare per order, distance fare per kilometre, time fare per minute
The tariffs must be divided into basic fare (per order), distance fare (per kilometre driven) and time fare (per minute). Together they form a tariff block. Surcharges are only possible for special effort or special equipment and are not a partial fare.

Question 2: By what may a Zürich taxi tariff be graded?
- By the passenger's origin (tourist or local)
- By the number of persons
- By time of day and day of the week
Show answer
Correct answer: By the number of persons · By time of day and day of the week
The tariffs may be graded by number of persons, time of day, day of the week and distance. Grading by the origin or person of the passenger is not provided for and would also be incompatible with the duty to state prices clearly and comparably.

Question 3: Until now, a taxi keeper has only stuck the tariffs on the inside behind the right side window. What has applied since January 2026 at the latest?
- That is still enough, as long as the tariffs can be read from outside.
- The tariffs must be on the outside of the right side of the vehicle; in addition, all tariffs with gradings and surcharges must be clearly legible inside.
- No display is needed on the outside any more, because the taximeter shows the tariff.
Show answer
Correct answer: The tariffs must be on the outside of the right side of the vehicle; in addition, all tariffs with gradings and surcharges must be clearly legible inside.
According to the Office for Mobility (Amt für Mobilität), from January 2026 at the latest the tariffs may no longer be placed behind a window but must be on the outside of the right side of the vehicle. In addition, all tariffs including gradings and surcharges must be clearly visible and legible inside. The taximeter display does not replace the tariff display.
