Question 1: Which authority issues the taxi licence in the canton of Zürich?
- The Road Traffic Office, which also issues the driving licence
- The cantonal Office for Mobility (Amt für Mobilität)
- The municipality where the taxi driver lives
Show answer
Correct answer: The cantonal Office for Mobility (Amt für Mobilität)
Since 1 January 2024, the Office for Mobility (Department of Economic Affairs) has enforced the PTLG and the PTLV and issues taxi licences, taxi vehicle permits and additional permits. The municipalities are no longer responsible. The Road Traffic Office only carries out the vehicle inspections – even though the application can be handed in at its counters.

Question 2: Taxi Limmat GmbH hires Lea. Lea has a valid Zürich taxi licence. The new company car is registered in the vehicle registration document for professional passenger transport but does not yet have a taxi vehicle permit. May Lea already do taxi journeys with it?
- Yes, if the taximeter has already been installed.
- Yes, the driver's taxi licence is enough.
- No, taxi journeys are only allowed once both the taxi licence and the taxi vehicle permit have been issued.
Show answer
Correct answer: No, taxi journeys are only allowed once both the taxi licence and the taxi vehicle permit have been issued.
In the canton of Zürich, two cantonal permits are needed: the taxi licence for the person and the taxi vehicle permit for the vehicle. Only when both have been issued may taxi journeys be carried out. An installed taximeter is only one requirement for the vehicle permit and does not replace it.

Question 3: Which requirements does the Zürich PTLG list for the issue of a taxi licence?
- Passed local knowledge test on the city of Zürich
- No entry in the criminal record
- Driving licence for professional passenger transport
- German language skills at least at level B1
Show answer
Correct answer: No entry in the criminal record · Driving licence for professional passenger transport · German language skills at least at level B1
The PTLG requires the BPT driving licence, German at least at level B1, no repeated job-related misconduct in the last five years and no criminal record entry. A local knowledge test is not part of it – the former municipal local knowledge test no longer exists since cantonal law took over.
